Walk to Emmaus: English

The story and the verses are familiar.  Shortly after the crucifixion, Cleopas and his friend are journeying to the village of Emmaus, just a day’s walk from Jerusalem.  They encounter a stranger on the road, who at first seems unfamiliar with the events that have just occurred.  But as they walk together, he begins to explain how all of the scripture and the prophets have explained what has just happened.

When He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and blessed it, and breaking it, He began giving it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight. They said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24: 30 – 32)

Like the journey of the two disciples long ago, the Walk to Emmaus is a three day experience that offers today’s disciples an opportunity to rediscover Christ’s presence in their lives, to gain fresh understanding of God’s transforming grace, and to form friendships that foster faith and support spiritual maturity. The Walk to Emmaus has been called a “short course in Christianity.” Perhaps it’s better understood as a “weekend encounter with Jesus.”  Those who experience an Emmaus weekend return with a new commitment to service and a better understanding of the God’s love and their value in the body of Christ.

Heart of Georgia Walk to Emmaus has been sponsoring weekend Emmaus events since 1990.  Today, two cycles of Walks to Emmaus are held in the Spring and Fall each year.  Women and men attend separate weekends, but husbands and wives are encouraged to attend in the same season.
